🙋🏽 Opt In vs. Opt out- Proposed Bill Increasing Religious Liberty

We celebrate the bill proposed by Senator Lankford gaining support with additional co-sponsors like Senator Moody for their work to protect the conscience rights and religious liberty of medical residency students.

Current Situation: In order for a medical program to be fully accredited, they must provide induced abortion training and there is an “opt out” option for first year residents. Here’s the problem with the “opt out” option, it creates an environment that can often cast the first year medical student as uncooperative in front of both peers and superiors. It can often cause these students to appear like they simply don’t want to do something within standard training.

How the Bill Fixes the Problem: The bill flips the script by proposing an “opt in” process where the standard training for the program would not include participating in induced abortion training.

This allows for two great strides:

Reducing the pressure often experienced by first year medical students to participate in performing an abortion training procedure to remain in good standing with their superiors.
Better supports faith-based hospitals.
